Design Engineer

Job Description: Responsible for working with clients, owners, and other design disciplines to produce coordinated drawings and specifications for pricing and construction. During pre-construction of larger projects, the Design Engineer supports the Lead Engineer in producing completed design documents. During construction, the Design Engineer supports the Lead Engineer and project management.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

  • Support Lead Engineers on large design projects.
  • Support Lead Engineers and sales in responding to Requests for Proposals (RFP)
  • Assist the sales team in the procurement of new work, including schematic-level designs for budget pricing and participating in project interviews.
  • Work with clients, owners and other design trades to produce coordinated design documents.
  • Provide a written definition of the plumbing systems - Basis of Design
  • Responsible for completion of design documents (specifications, construction drawing sets, basis of design)
  • Coordinate project schedules with other Lead Engineers and the Technical Services Manager.
  • Document design revisions and scope change issues using the Engineering Design Log and Critical Issues Log.
  • Maintain the Drawing Issue Log to ensure design and construction teams have current drawings and other pertinent documents.
  • Provide construction support
  • Review shop drawings and submittals
  • Respond to field questions
  • Ensure design changes are documented and issued to project management.
  • Perform regular on-site reviews and produces engineering construction reports.
  • Assist Project Management during closeout of work (commissioning, as-built drawings)
  • Support the special projects group with design services and technical assistance.

  • Ability to plan ahead for project staffing needs.
  • Professional and ethical.
  • Understanding of HVAC, plumbing and piping systems.
  • Knowledge of International Codes, and NFPA standards as related to plumbing and medical gas systems.
  • Calculate building services (water, waste, storm, gas)
  • Properly size equipment such as chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, fans, pumps, boilers, water heaters and medical gas systems.
  • Ability to edit company Master Specifications for project specific requirements.
  • Read and understand drawings provided by other disciplines including architectural, structural, civil and electrical. Problem solving/decision making - able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task with attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to change gears and re-prioritize tasks under pressure and to similarly motivate staff to do the same.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Willing to work with other employees in a team.
  • AutoCAD experience - ability to plot drawings and make minor revisions to existing drawings.
  • Computer skills - competent with spreadsheets and word processor programs.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in plumbing and piping systems design.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree.
